What to expect from a jet ski rental in Miami
Every jet ski rental in Miami with Funwaves takes place on Biscayne Bay, not the open ocean. The bay is flat, calm, and protected by the barrier islands that make up Miami Beach. Water depth ranges from about 6 to 12 feet in the areas we use, and there is almost no wave action on a typical day.
Each session starts with a boat ride from the dock out to the riding area. The boat has speakers so you get music on the way out. Once you are on the water, you have the bay to yourself and your group. The staff stays nearby on a guide boat the entire time.
From the jet ski you can see the downtown Miami skyline, the cranes at the Port of Miami, and the mansions on Star Island. On the guided tour, you ride past Fisher Island and loop through the bay with a guide who calls out landmarks. The free ride option lets you go at your own speed within a marked area.
Sessions run close to the full hour. Check-in is about 15 minutes before your time slot. The safety briefing takes 5 minutes. After that you are on the water for the remaining time. Most people are soaked by the end, so plan to leave in your swimsuit or bring a change of clothes.
Best time for jet ski rentals in Miami
Miami has rideable weather year-round, which is one reason jet ski rentals in Miami stay busy even in winter. Water temperature stays above 70°F in January, and Biscayne Bay is sheltered enough that wind is rarely a problem. That said, there are differences between seasons.
November through April is dry season. Skies are clear, humidity is lower, and afternoon thunderstorms are rare. This is peak tourist season so jet ski rental slots fill up faster, especially on weekends. Booking a day or two ahead is a good idea.
May through October is wet season. Afternoon rain showers are common but usually short, 20 to 40 minutes. Mornings are almost always clear. If you are visiting in summer, book a morning slot. You will have better weather and the bay is calmer before noon.
We operate 7 days a week from 10 AM to 5:00 PM. The first slot of the day tends to have the flattest water and the fewest other boats on the bay.
Tips for first-time jet ski riders
Most people searching for a jetski rental near them have never actually ridden one. That is normal. The Yamaha VX jet skis we use are recreation models, built to be stable, predictable, and hard to flip. The throttle works like a motorcycle: squeeze to go, release to slow down. No gear shifting.
The safety briefing covers how to start, stop, turn, and what to do if you fall off (you climb back on, it happens occasionally and the jet ski is designed for it). Wear sunscreen before you arrive, not after. Once your hands are wet it is hard to apply and it drips into your eyes.
If you wear glasses, bring a strap. Contacts are fine. Leave your phone in the car unless you have a waterproof pouch with a lanyard. We have seen a lot of phones go into Biscayne Bay. Sunglasses with a sport strap are worth it, the glare off the water is strong in the afternoon especially.
Group jet ski rentals in Miami
We regularly handle bachelor parties, birthday groups, corporate outings, and family reunions. Biscayne Bay fits multiple jet skis at once on separate machines. If your group has more than 4 riders, call us at (786) 553-7644 so we can block out enough machines and make sure the timing works.
For larger groups, we can combine jet ski rentals with a boat rental. The boat fits up to 8 people and has Bluetooth speakers and a cooler. Some groups do a split session, half on jet skis, half on the boat, then swap. Call or book online to set that up.
